Strange Seafood Protein Sources

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

As promised in my earlier article on Ultimate Ab Workout Men I’m going to share with you some of my unusual sources of protein.

We harp about it all day long - protein - it’s the perfect food if you want to build big strong muscles, lose weight and get that defined ripped look. But to reach those goals you’re going to need to get your hands on only the best sources of protein available. Remember that quantity counts here too, for every pound of body weight you must eat at least 1 gram of protein every day. Before you leave this page and forget about it forever make sure you hit the bookmark button at the top.

First Up - Cod

Cod is the daddy when it come to low saturated fat, serving up just a measly 0.5%! If you eat 300 grams of Cod you’ll be getting your RDA of magnesium in one go. Magnesium will help your body generate energy and push it to your muscles, it also prevents cramp by helping your muscles contract properly.

You won’t need to put any salt on your Cod as it’s already high in sodium seeing as its a sea water fish after all.

If you need something to eat alongside your Cod I recommend broccoli. A study was undertaken at The Institute of Food Research earlier this year to test the effects sulforaphane-rich (such as broccoli) had on cancer cells, they found that when these foods were eaten with foods high in selenium (like Cod) they were 13 more times powerful than eating them on their own.

Protein Source 2 - Clams

Clams contain over three times the amount of your RDA of vitamin B12. This rare vitamin works wonders on your nervous system and provides a large source of energy your body needs to metabolise the three food types - proteins, fats and carbs. Selenium is also found in molluscs. If you find that your muscles become stiff after workouts its a good idea to get as much selenium into your diet as you possibly can as it relaxes your muscles preventing cramp.

Clams do have a downside however - they contain high levels of cholesterol, which can be a pain for some people.

If you’re going to be trying any clams or molluscs I highly recommend eating them alongside tomatoes. Tomatoes contain lots of vitamin C, which assists the body in absorbing the iron found in clams.
